#9 – Back Up Your Data Regularly

Regular backups ensure you can recover your important information quickly and easily.

1. The 3-2-1 backup rule

A reliable strategy is the 3-2-1 rule:

  • 3 copies of your data – one primary and two backups

  •  2 different storage types – e.g., external hard drive, USB drive, or NAS

  • 1 offsite copy – store in the cloud or at a different physical location

This strategy protects your data even if one storage method fails or is compromised.

2. Tips for backing up effectively

  • Automate backups whenever possible so you don’t forget
  • Verify backups regularly to ensure files can be restored
  • Encrypt sensitive data for security, especially if using cloud or offsite storage
  • Include important emails and system settings, not just documents

Backing up isn’t a one-time task—it’s ongoing protection. Treat backups as essential maintenance to keep your personal and business data safe.
